International day

On the last day of last term ( 19th of october) was international day. It is one of the biggest events in my international school. IB students planned the day and set up everything with teachers.Year 12 students organized some activities and each countries were allocated at every rooms. And year 13 students organised the GYM for talent show and prepared the dining hall.  In the morning we put the carpet on the gym and carried chairs for students and parents. Also we carried some musical instrument such as drums that was used during the concert. At 11 O'clock parents were coming to school and we were supposed to guide them. In my school there are many Korean parents, so I was really busy to translate for them and helping them to set up the foods. This was my last international day in BIS 3 So I did my best.
There were some learning outcomes
- I had planned and initiated activities
-I had worked collaboratively with others
-I had considered the ethical implications of my actions

Gym

In this term, I had two goals that I wanted to achieve - Increasing my stamina, Increasing the muscles. For doing it I went to a gym called 'world class' which is infront of my house every weekend . For showing my progress, first of all I measured how much kg I can afford and how much time I can run. On the first day I ran about 30 minutes with the speed 5km/h~ 7km/h.  And I could fold my arms 15 times with 5kg weight. I went to the gym regularly and I also could increase my stamina by doing the badminton club in my school.
After 2 month, I measured how much kg I can afford and how much time I can run. This time, I ran about 45 minutes wit the speed 5km/h~ 7km/h. And I could fold my arms 30 times with 5kg weight now. There was very obvious progress and I feel proud of it.

There were some learning objects from this activity.
I had increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas of growth.
I had shown perseverance and commitment in my activity.

Making kimchi

Kimchi is one of the famous Korean foods. This is not only tasty but also very healthy food. Scientists figured out that Kimchi contains many good nutrient that fight against diseases. It is a tradition to make Kimchi before the winter (about October ~Novemebr).
Making kimchi is called "Kimjang'. My mom and I decided to do it.

First, I needed to spray salts to the cabbage. And then I made the special spicy sauce for Kimchi. I used the powder of peppers, pear, onion, gingers etc. After I finish the sauce I combine it with the salted cabbage. Usually we do not eat this directly. We save it under the ground for several months and eat it. But in Moscow , I can not do that so we just saved it in the fridge.

By this activity
I developed new skills
I had undertaken new challenges

Clean up day

on 29th of september, there was a project ran by my father's company (Hyundai). We went to the national park called the Prioksko-Terrasny National park. This project was named 'clean-up day'. Many people who are working in this company and their family participated in this project. So we divided people in to three groups. There were many works to do - Transferring timbers to another place, painting fence and etc. I was sent to the red group ( as you can see in the picture) and my group decided to paint the fence. People in my group got a basket of green paint and a brush for each. It was much more difficult than I thought since it is my first time to paint a fence. After this project, I was so proud that I was one of the participants in the clean up day.

There are many learning outcomes from this activity.
I developed new skills - It was my first time to paint the fence.
I worked collaboratively with others- We worked as a group , and I could know many people from my father's company.
Considered the ethical implication of my actions -  I did not get paid for this work. I just volunteered for cleaning up the national park.
Engaged with issues of global importance - Participating in clean-up day.

Teaching guitar

I started to teach playing guitar to people in the church. I have been playing guitar for almost 2 years. I started to play a guitar since I am doing the CAS activities. Now I can play guitar very well comparing to the previous year. I noticed that there are some people who want to play guitar in my church. I decided to teach them.
Usually people in the church want to learn how to play a guitar because of praise. So I asked them choose one song that they want to play and I taught how to play the song. There are many basic skills that they need to learn. but their aim was playing the guitar only for the praise. So I skipped to teach how to read the melody and some basic stuffs and I started to teach chords. Chords are the only thing what they need for playing guitar in this case. I am still teaching them how to play it and I hope that before the new year they can play at least 3 songs. So teaching them 3 songs is my final aim of this activity

There are some learning objectives from this activity.
I had increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth. I had undertaken new challenges (teaching how to play a guitar).

Badminton club

Until last year Mr. Mann was the supervisor of the badminton club and he was running this club but since he left the school year 13 students started to run this club and I am one of them who are running the club. I worked collaboratively with others for doing it.
First, I encouraged students who are from different year group to join the club.As a result, some other IB students from year 12 , and some other students from key stage 3 and even other teachers came to our badminton club.

Since there are new members of badminton club, I had to explain the rule of badminton. But some members had played for a long time with us so they can play very well. I also played for a long time so I could get some difficult skills such as smashing. By doing this activity I can increase my stamina. This exercise is quite hard than we are thinking, we play badminton for an hour. And if you jump and chase the shuttlecock that is really hard work. Also this is good for the arm and leg muscles.

There are many learning outcomes from it. I had increased my awareness of my own strength and areas for growth. I had planned and initiated activities. I worked collaboratively with others and I developed new skills

Creating front page of tabloid newspaper

As a part of IB course ( English language and literature) , I created a front page of tabloid newspaper. It was my first time to create this kind of thing. For creating a front page of tabloid newspaper I used the Microsoft word. It is the most familiar soft ware that I could use. I wanted to deal with the world issues for the front page. Especially I wanted something sensational because sensational headlines can attract more attention from the audience. I found very appropriate article for the front page of tabloid newspaper. It was an anti-Japanese demonstration in China. There were many sensational images and languages that I could use.Since the masthead was "The Korea Times" this tabloid newspaper is supposed to publish in Korea. So I wanted to contain some biases in this news paper. Japan is having a confliction not only with China but also with Korea about the territory. So usually many Korean medias have bias when they deal with the relationship with Japan. So for showing the bias , in the article I wrote that Japan has serious confliction with China,Korea and Russia. It can lead the readers to think that Japan is the center of the problem
By doing this task. I could show my understanding of bias in the media and how the front page of newspapers can attract reader's attention.
There were some learning outcomes.

  • Increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth
  • Undertaken new challenges

Summer Holiday 2012

During the summer holiday, I did some activities for CAS.

For action, I did 'jump rope'  everyday.
For creativity, I learned how to cook
For service, I cleaned the park in front of my house.

Since I knew that 'Jump rope' is the best way to lose fat, everyday I am practicing the jump rope. There are many techniques  to practice . For example. 'making X' during the jump rope is one of the most difficult one. I have been practicing it everyday and finally I can do it .

When I lived in Korea, my mother studied cooking and she also has license for Korean food. Since she has an license she knows a lot of Korean foods, therefore I am learning how to cook Korean food. During this summer holiday I learned how to cook' Bibim bab'which is one of the most famous Korean food. This food is very popular because it is very healthy food since it has low calories with many vegetables in it.

For service, I cleaned the park in front of my house. There is a small park in front of my house. There are many visitors everyday, so there are many trashes everywhere in the park. I am also one of the visitors so I don't feel very good when the park is really dirty. So I decided to volunteer for cleaning the park. And during this summer holiday I cleaned the park

School 4 Fair

I had visited the British International school campus 4. Now, I am attending to the British International School campus3 and the school 4 fair is one of the traditions that our school has. Year 12 students in my school go to the school 4 and provide some activities for kids in school 4. This time for the activity I planned 'mini-golf'. Fortunately,I already had all of the equipment that I need since my father really likes to play golf. Since, this is an activity for kids, I concerned about the level of this activities. I thought that it is too difficult for kids. Since the aim of this activity is providing fun to kids in school 4, I decided to make it more easier. I did not want kids to be dissapointed because they didn't make the goal. So, for 1 coupon I gave them 3 chances , if they fail at the first time, then I let them try it more closely to the hole .If they succeeded in it, I gave them candies for the prize.Fortunately, the kids really enjoyed my activity and if they failed, they asked their friends to challenge so that more and more kids came to my activity.
I was really happy that I could provide fun to little children and I think that it was very successful activity. Not only this but also I translated for Korean parents in the school for the service. In lunch time, there were some Korean parents who were selling the Korean food and they asked to translate for the guests. I attracted all of my friends to the Korean food court and introduced the Korean food. They really appreciated to me.

There are some learning outcomes from this activity.
I had planned and initiated activities
I had considered the ethical implication of their actions.

Istra trip

As part of ESS course work we had a trip to Istra which is located outside of Moscow. The hotel that we stayed was located in the middle of forest. So we could do many investigations in there with many plants, animals and insects. On the first day, we spent time to create a map of Istra so that we can get some ideas of Istra's location. On the next day we did some experiments with teachers and on the last day we had to do our own investigation individually. Except these experiments we did many activities including making a boat and sheep herding. By making a boat we could learn about chemical reactions. Also by doing the sheep herding activity we could develop our communication skills. And during the Istra trip I could learn how to do an investigation. For my own investigation I made my own hypothesis and then tried to prove it. The trip was absolutely fantastic and there were so many things that I learnt from it.
  • Undertaken new challenges-It was my first time to make a hypothesis and prove it.
  • Plan and initiate activities- I planned my own investigation
  • Work collaboratively with others- Most of activities and experiments were group activities
  • Develop new skills- I learned how to use new equipments

Lunch time 'Insanity workout" club & After school 'Badminton club'

For CAS activity, I joined two sports clubs in my school. One is working out club in lunch time and the another one is badminton club after school. The working out club was ran by three IB students and I was really interested in this club and joined it. These three students downloaded videos for the working out and told us what to do. I followed them and I could gain muscles from this club.
The another club that I did in this term was badminton club. The supervisor of this club is Mr.Mann but actually IB students including me are running this club. I attracted many students for this badminton club. Before we start this club I always set up the nets and then cleaned the nets after the club. If there are new students I taught them some rules and how to play it. Many students enjoyed this club
By joining and running these clubs there were some learning outcomes

  • Increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in my activities
  • Developed new skills

Making a coffee

Since I really like drinking coffees I was really interested in making coffee. In this term, I bought a machine and coffee beans for making coffee for my self.

First of all I ground coffee beans and then put it in the coffee machine. Also I put 1 cup of water (about 200ml) in the coffee machine. I press the button and then waited for 5minutes so that the machine extract coffee.

While I was waiting for the machine, I made bubbles of milk because I wanted to make a cappuccino. I boiled milk first and then I used a tool for making bubbles. If I boil the milk it is much easier to make bubbles. After I finished making bubbles I put it in the coffee extract from the machine and some caramel liquid and sugars. It tasted so good.

There were some learning outcomes from this activity.
  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Developed new skills

Cooking a chicken

In this term, I decided to bake a cake for 'creativity' but since I could not get some stuff for baking a cake I decided to learn to cook another food. I have a machine for frying foods so I decided to cook a chicken.
FIrst of all, I prepared chickens, and powder for chickens. and then I covered chicken with the powder and waited for 15 minutes for the powders covering the chicken perfectly.

I put oils in the machine and waited for boiling. When the oils started to boil I put chickens in there and waited for about 15minutes.  15minutes later I checked if the chickens are ripen or not. I learned that if chickens are not ripen it can cause serious diseases so I checked if the chicken is red or not. I made sure that it was perfectly ripen and then took it out from the machine.

After I took it out from the machine I divided 8 chickens in to 4 and then for half of them I covered some special sauce.

There were some learning outcomes from this activity

  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Developed new skills

Going to the gym "world class"

There is a gym called 'world calss' in Novie chereyomusky. I attend to this gym every wednesday and weekend. There are so many sports that I can do in this fitness center including swimming, tennis etc. But in this term I decided to work out in this gym.
There are 3 steps that I use my energy. When I start exercising my body starts to use carbohydrate and after my body used all of the carbohydrate my body starts to use proteins for exercising. Protein is the nutrient for making muscles. and the last nutrient that is used for exercising is fat. So when I arrive at the gym I start running machine to run for 40mins. By running I can use all of my carbohydrate and then I start to weight-training so that I can make muscles. after this I start to run again so that I can burn my fat. In this term I repeated this same working out.
There are many learning outcomes from this.
  • I had increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth
  • I had shown perseverance and commitment in my activities
  • I had undertaken new challenges.

Donating clothes & books

Since I am a christian, I attend to a Korean church in Moscow. There is a system that we donate clothes and books or any other stuffs that poor people and orphans might need in our church. If we donate them they are sent to Korean orphanage or church that provides stuff for very cheap price.  So this term, I decided to donate books and clothes that I do not use in now days. I donated about 10 clothes including pants and shirts and 20 books including novels and comic books.
People in the church said that these books will be donated to the library of an orphanage and the clothes will be sent to the same orphanage and if there will be no one who wants my clothes it will be sent to the church that provide stuffs for very cheap price. It is very similar to the jumble sale that I did in my school.
Through this service I learnt that useless things for me will be very useful to others. There were some learning outcomes from this activity. I had considered the ethical implications of my action. Also, since I donate the clothes and books they can be used one more time so I had engaged with issues of global importance

Food serving for elderly

On 10th of may 2012, I went to a cafe where provides free food for elderly. The place where I have been to is supported by an American church and some of companies to provide some free food. Before I serve the food I washed my hands and started to give a coupon. When all of the elderly got coupons we started to serve. If we get one coupon we provided one soup, one main dish, one salad, one juice and two breads. Some elderly gave the coupon with a basket for take-out , then we put all the food in the baskets as they want. After all of the elderly finished eating, we started to clean. We carried all of the dishes. It was not very hard work because many students also came for the service from Anglo-American school. Include the teachers and university students, about 10 people were working so this was not really hard working. And unfortunately, I heared that every year less people are coming for this service because companies do not support as much as they did. I hope more people come to the service. And I want to go to serve the food as much as I can. Actually, it was my first time to serve the food to people ( especially for free) and it was very meaningful challenge to serve food to russian elderly.
There were many learning outcomes through this challenge.
- I had undertaken new challenges ( it was my first time to serve food )
-I had considered the ethical implications of my action ( we were serving the food for free to the elderly)

Swimming

Since I planned swimming for CAS I started to swim once a week (every sunday) . Every sunday I go to 'world class' which has swimming pool. When I was really young I learned how to swim but actually I did not swim over about 10 years.  I heared that swimming is very good exercise for muscles and lungs. When I just started swimming again it was really hard to swim even just one lap. But I practiced swimming every week and I can swim 2laps now. But also I exercised for my muscles because for swimming I need really strong muscles that can afford swimming for 2 laps. By swimming actually I also lost my weight.

There are many outcomes from swimming
First, I increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth/
I had undertaken new challenges
I developed new skills

Guitar (finger style)

I have been playing guitar for almost one year. I never had lessons with a teacher and I just studied about the guitar alone and I played it. Last time I played very basic song which does not require very difficult techniques. But this time I tried to play more difficult song which requires more techniques.
Last time I needed to play guitar only with 'stroke' but this time the style of my playing was 'finger style' which plays the guitar lines one by one. This time I also had to remember some chords to play this song. The chords were B#m,E,Em7 and F#m. These chords are also much difficult than before becaus B#m and F#m are high chords. For playing high chords I had to press all of the lines with my index finger and it really hurts and difficult. And the biggest problem was that if I play high chords it does not sound really clear because I did not press all the lines. But I continued to practice again and again and finally I succeeded in playing high chords with very clear sound.
By learning guitar. I had undertaken new challenges by playing different style.
I had shown perseverance and commitment by playing it for one year.
I also developed my new skills

Badminton club

Badminton club is an activity that I don every week on tuesday after school with a teacher and students from all year group.. I started to play badminton in the badminton club since year10, I have been playing for the tuesday badminton club for 3 years. At the beginning of this club in this year, there were only 3 IB students and one teacher who were doing this activity. However, We advertised this club and we invited many students from all year groups. Now, we have more than 8 people who are joining this club and the club is becoming more big and more interesting.Since, young kids from year 7 and 8 students come to the badminton club we , IB students, tried to teach them basic rules of badmintons and skills that are needed for playing. Most of students found difficulty to serve and smash but we spent long times to teach them how to serve and smash and finally most of students got the skills.

There were some learning outcomes from this activity. First of all I have been playing for the tuesday badminton club for 3 years now and this shows my commitment and perseverance towards badminton club. Also we play badminton 2 against 2 so we work collaboratively with others. Also I increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth by teaching new students how to play badminton.

Weather club

Since I started my IB diploma program, I am joining the weather club which is run by our geography and ESS teacher Mr. O’Conner. At the beginning of this activity we learned how to use new unfamiliar equipments and we measured the air pressure, precipitations, temperatures etc. The aim of this activity was proving that the global warming is becoming serious problem and the average temperature of the globe is rising. For proving that, the weather club students are measuring the temperature of our school and then we compare it to the average climate of Russia.  However, in this term we did something new. Not only measuring the temperatures, but also we drew an enormous graph with using the data. We drew a graph of our measurement of our school and also the average climates of Russia. So we could easily compare them.

By doing this activity there are some learning outcomes.

I had shown perseverance and commitment in my activity. Because this work should be done through the whole year.

Also I am developing new skills by graphing the data. And I had engaged with issues of global importance because we are doing this project because of the global warming.

Winter Activity Day

Today, 2013-03-13, is winter activity day and IB students organized activities that are related to the winter.
I organized a hockey play with two other students. Before other year groups come to our activity, we set up the goals prepared balls and sticks. We made some rules for the safety of students. For example students were not allowed to swing their sticks over their waist. We explained the basic rules and we let them play hockey. Students were very enthusiastic and they really enjoyed them selves. We gave inter-house points for teams that won the game. I was really happy that kids enjoyed our activity
There were some learning outcomes from this activity. First of all, it was first time to be a referee. So I had undertaken new challenges. I also planned and initiated activities. Also I was the side-referee and another student was the main refree, So we worked collaboratively.

Valentines Day Disco

On 14th Feburary year12 and 13 students organized a disco for Valentines day. This disco was held to raise money for donating to the Guide dog organization. Therefore we needed to make some ideas to raise money. First of all, we decided to make the valentine day as non uniform day. So students who donot want to wear uniform had to bring 100 roubles not to wear the uniforms. We earned huge amount of money from it. and also we decided to sell sandwiches, snacks and drinks. All of students were involved in this activity and my role was selling the snacks.
The disco was very successful and raised really huge amount of money from it. However, we didnot really earn money from selling the snacks but fortunately we still have many snacks left so we can do something with it. For example, we can make a lottery and sell it and if a student win the lottery we can give all of the snacks.
The main aim of this disco was to raise money for donating but also we provided  really good opportunity to students to have fun with friends in the school. It was very good chance for foreign students who cannot really go out side to have really great time with their friends.
It was very big event and there were many things to organize and therefore also there were many learning outcomes. I had undertaken new challenges such as selling goods. Also I had planned and initiated activities. Also I had worked collaboratively with others, Also basically this activity was for donating so I had considered the ethical implications of my actions.

Korean orphange

http://www.heymyung.org/

I went to a orphange in Korea during the winter break. I contacted with the orphange before I went to there and I got a permission to do some services in there. when i went to the orphange many events were going on because it was a new year and children were celebrating it. So it was really messy with many decorations. So first task that I had to do was cleaning the orphange. I cleaned bedrooms that children were using and I cleaned toys and many stuffs. Also I carried some heavy things for decorations. Also I provided food for children and at the end, I donated money that will be used for children's new toys.
I worked for the children who were abandoned by their parents. So I had considered the ethical implications of my actions.

Learning how to make korean foods

                                        -The picture of kimchi
                                          -The picture of jap chae
I learned how to make 'jap chae' and 'Kimchi'. These two foods are very famous korean food. Especially 'kimchi' is considered one of the best food by scientists. Scientists found that it contains many nutrients that protect people from disease such as cancer. So it became very famous and I felt that I have duty to learn how to make kimchi as korean. So I had learned how to make 'kimchi' and 'Japchae'
For making kimchi I needed to prepare some ingridients-cabbage,ground pepper, garlic etc. And for jap chae- noodles, beef, carrot etc
For making kimchi first I spread salt on the cabbage and then kept it for few hours and then I spread special sauce on the cabbage. For making 'japchae' I mixed many ingridients such as roasted beef, carrots and noodles. My mom helped me to do this.
There were many learning outcomes. First I increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth. And I had undertaken new challenges. And I developed new skills

Guitar

I started to play guitar since about a year. I had no teacher who can actually teach me the guitar, So I started to play alone. I bought many books about the basic of guitars. There were many things to learn. First of all, by reading a book I learned that 6lines have their own sound "mi,ra,rae, sol,si,mi' and for play guitar I had to memorize many Chords. Chord is the harmony of many sounds.
In this video I played "Banmal song " which is very famous korean song . This song is  made with many chords - G D Em Am C Am7 Bm7 etc. For playing this song I had to memorize all of these chords. And for playing this song, the another thing that I had to learn was 'stroke' There are really many kinds of strokes. but in this song I needed to learn only 1 stroke - down up mutedown up up mutedown up. The most difficult thing was mute down in this song. For giving more beats there is a mute stroke and this was quite difficult for me to play.
By learning guitar, I learned not only how to play guitar but actual the basic of music such as melody, chords. And I also learned how to read the tab music. There fore I can say that there were many learning outcomes. My target is to play the guitar with the 'finger style' which is much difficult than 'stroke'
First of all , I had increased my awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth, also
I had undertaken new challenges. and I had played it for one year and I will continue this work so I had shown perseverance and commmitiment in my activity. Also I can say that I developed new skills

Jogging

There is a little park infront of my house. It is the best place for me to exercise. I started jogging from the summer in 2011 and I had continued it until today and I will continue this exercising. In Moscow , it snows really alot and very often. However, as you can see in the picture, cleaners in my apartment clean the way everyday, and there is no problem to exercising. The whole lap of this little park is about 200M and everyday I run 10 laps which means I run 2km everyday.

As a result, I had shown perseverance and commitment in my activity because I do this exercising everyday and I had continued it until today and as a result I lost 12 kg which is very difficult achivement. And by jogging I learned how to breathe during the running therefore, I can say that I developed new skills
